Tammy Alvarez: School ‘drop-off zones’ are dangerous to kids, other drivers
With classes back in session, parents are once again faced with having to deal with the unsafe pick-up and drop-off zones at their children’s schools.
The words “pick up and drop off zones” should be used lightly because people think they can park in the lane where the children need to be dropped off, causing dangerous and hazardous conditions for the children and other vehicles that have to go around the parked vehicles or get backed up on the road waiting to get into the parking lot.
Those dropping off children in the mornings have ample parking space available on the side of the road of the schools and beyond. People need to park then walk their child up to the sidewalk so it does not cause the zone to become congested and unsafe – creating an “accident waiting to happen” area.
People need to think of the children’s safety first and foremost. Dropping off or picking up children from school should not be dangerous. Adhering to traffic signs and proper protocol should be done by everyone entering or exiting the school site.
