Bob Calaway: Contributions rules not broken
Re “Atwater candidate’s fliers break state law” (Page A1, Nov. 4): The reporter wrote: “Earlier this year, a political committee supporting (James) Vineyard and two other candidates ... asked that donations be dropped off at the police station inside City Hall, a public building. The committee used the money to purchase signs and fliers supporting the three candidates.” Here’s the rest of story: No money was left at the police department during a two-month period. But, contributions received were used to purchase signs and fliers. The reporter wrote: “Although the committee reported raising more than $1,000, the group had not filed mandatory financial disclosure forms required by the Fair Political Practices Commission.” The rest of the story: The first two filings were submitted late, my error, but they were completed and filed. The third financial disclosure reporting period was on time. A little more in-depth investigation from the Sun-Star would have shown these filings.
