Wayne Hutton: Sheriff candidates ran clean campaigns

I am writing to thank both of Merced County’s candidates for sheriff for running one of the cleanest campaigns I can recall, and certainly cleaner than campaigns that were being run for other offices. In all that they did on the campaign trail, Pat Lunney and Vern Warnke both showed that they are good and decent men. Vern will be replacing another truly dedicated, honorable man, Tom Cavallero, this January as our sheriff.

As is true in every change of sheriff, the law-enforcement community will come together and support the people’s choice. Vern deserves, and will need the support, of all the citizens of Merced County, not just those in law enforcement, in facing the challenges on the horizon. Those challenges won’t be just his to face as our next sheriff, they need to be faced by all of us, together.

Wayne Hutton, Merced
