Tim O’Neill: Appoint Weimer to seat, save $44,000

When Sam Spangler resigned from the Merced Union High School Board it set the clock in motion for the board to determine how to replace him. The board decided, rightly, to appoint someone to finish out the final two years of Spangler’s term.

Five candidates offered to serve and the four remaining board members could not agree on someone to appoint. They will try again at their next regularly scheduled board meeting on Nov. 12. If they still cannot come up with a choice the district will be forced to hold a special election at a cost of over $44,000.

There is a very simple solution to save $44,000. One of the individuals who offered to serve is a former board member and a well-respected member of the business and agricultural community, Robert Weimer. Bob served the district well for 20 years and can hit the ground running. And he has publicly stated he has no interest in running once the term is over, providing ample time for interested candidates to prepare for the next election. Please contact your board members to let them know that there are much better ways to spend $44,000.
