Joe Brucia: Sun-Star took cheap shot at Councilman Belluomini

Re “Belluomini map puts him alone” (Page 1A, Sept. 18): This story was a cheap shot at a city council member who is offering his professional expertise to the city. Anyone acquainted with Michael Belluomini knows his career was in public planning. He is not a politician. The Merced Sun-Star can argue that their headline was factual, but their inference was clear.

There are pros and cons related to each districting map. Where a city council member lives is not a consideration in choosing the best map. I am sure this will not be a decisive factor of any city council member. Devising district maps is never an easy task. Ask any school district board member who has adopted new attendance boundaries. They will tell you that no matter what map is adopted, some people will be displeased.

I doubt that addresses of city council members were a factor in the Independent Districting Advisory Committee’s final recommendations.

Joe Brucia, Merced
