Daniel Darby: Ditching team names for PC purposes is stupid

Re “Ditching ‘Redskins’ name is a step towards healing” (Our View, Oct. 17): Your Editorial view of “Redskins” name included some “stupid” comments about fans’ dress and behavior. If the statement is indeed true, the state and nation should ban every reference to every sports team (Indians, Braves, Warriors, Blackhawks) to prevent any further political incorrectness. These fans love their teams and their team names; the mascots represent strength and possibly fierceness. Fans don’t do this to insult native Americans.

Where does this political correctness silliness stop? Maybe we need to amend the First Amendment so as not to offend anyone with our speech. Have any comment on that idea without coming off as un-American?

Daniel Darby, Merced
