Jarred Simmons: Capial Air Show a model for Castle
On Oct. 3, several friends and I took the two-hour drive and treated ourselves along with approximately 100,000 other spectators to the two-day Capitol Air Show at Mather Field, formally known as Mather Air Force Base before it closed in 1993. This show, sponsored by the County of Sacramento, City of Rancho Cordova and a number of private sponsors, not only was a spectacular airshow featuring the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, Canadian Snowbirds and many WWII aircraft, it also showcased UPS and Fed Ex large cargo and small personal aircraft. This event was a shining example of a well-executed base reuse plan for public/private economic development.
With Castle Airport’s last attempt at an Air Show in September 1999, and struggling economic development over the last 20 years, one encourages our supervisors and staff to take the two-hour car ride and visit next year’s 11th annual Capital Air Show. Great show and great example of base reuse and long-term economic development.
