City Council’s support will nurture future leaders
The Merced City Council has decided to spend $12,500 to support a youth council. Not only is this good news, it makes great sense. The council will be composed of young people, who are the future leaders of Merced. If developed and nurtured properly, this modest investment today will pay tremendous dividends for Merced tomorrow.
We’ve been working with youth to help them complete their applications. We’re thrilled that they’ve stepped up! We encourage all youth to apply and take advantage of this leadership opportunity. Our city needs a strong youth voice. Be a voice for yourself, other young people and your city.

Merced can be proud of its support for veterans
The last few weeks were a busy time for VFW Post 4327. Our two-day Buddy Poppy Drive was a resounding success. We set up donation tables at Paul’s Place, Save Mart and Walgreens, all on G Street. The money collected goes to support the VFW National Home for Children, our local Post relief fund and programs that benefit returning veterans. We participated in the Veterans Day parade and tried to recognize veterans in the crowd and hand out candy to the kids.
Mercedians have proved over and over that they fully support the military presence. I say, “carry on.”
