Tom Hothem: City Hall should explain why it is watering foot-tall grass

Although we’ve been fortunate to have received some rain – which has restored greenness to our lawns and parks – we remain in a serious drought. Despite these conditions, the city of Merced continues to irrigate the greenbelts along Black Rascal Creek, sometimes for hours on end, every night of the week. The grass there is almost a foot high in places. Studies have shown that Merced is among the 10 worst water guzzlers in the state.

I trust that if the city cannot curb such wasteful watering, City Hall has reason for it. I look forward to an explanation in the Sun-Star.

Tom Hothem, Merced
