Mark Carpenter: Press should be asking difficult questions about stabbings

The freedoms granted in our Constitution for a free press demand that the press search for answers, no matter how difficult the answers they may uncover. There are logical questions to be asked in the story about the stabbings at UC Merced. The national media won’t ask those questions. If the local newspaper won’t either, for the sake of political correctness, or for fear of causing a negative image of the UC, why have a free press?
