Linda Young: Merced’s AARP chapter a hidden jewel

I would like to invite Merced’s senior population to attend the upcoming meeting of our local AARP group. This organization is a hidden jewel; the meetings are very interesting and informative. Our last meeting featured speakers discussing identity theft and different strategies to avoid it. At our next meeting we have invited the fire department speak on fire safety and tell us how to have free smoke detectors installed in our homes.

We also offer low-cost day trips to different, interesting and fun places. We have been to both the Roaring Camp Railroad in Felton and The Golden Chain Theatre in Oakhurst. On Dec. 6 we are going to Columbia for a live performance of “A Columbia Christmas Carol.” The trip costs $75 for members, so if you are not already a member, ($5 a year), join and come along.

Our upcoming meeting will be Wednesday, Nov. 18th at 10 a.m. at the Merced Community Senior Center, 755 west Main St. There will be a full turkey dinner and pie feast. As usual, we will be having lunch catered by the Barbecue Pit for only $6 per person.
