Melvin Ladousier: Impound vehicles of those without insurance
Re “Our View: Hard reality of new driver’s licensing law” (Page 8A, Nov. 18): Obviously fear of receiving a citation for not having insurance is simply not sufficient motivation to purchase even subsidized insurance. Let’s up the ante. When you get stopped for DUI you are not allowed to leave the scene by driving. Why not do the same for uninsured motorists?
Impound the vehicle. Hold the vehicle until the owner shows up with proof of insurance, and pays the expense of the impoundment, to include the officer’s time on the scene to have the vehicle picked up. Courts need not be involved any more than they would in the case of a speeding ticket. Pass that kind of law and see if the rate of uninsured motorist citations decreases.
