Nancy Young-Bergman: City driver finds a phone, saves the day

I want to share a story about one of our outstanding city of Merced employees, whose compassionate heart truly helped me avoid a potentially disastrous situation! His name is Chris Bucao, and he is a refuse driver whose quick thinking and kindness saved my day.

Last week, I misplaced my cell phone, and though it contains critical information I had not yet backed it up and was absolutely frantic!

Little did I know that Chris, a very good Samaritan, was looking after me. While on his regular route, Chris spotted a lonely cell phone lying in the street. Rather than driving by, he stopped, picked it up and turned it in to the Public Works office, where Monique soon came to the rescue!

By afternoon I had reluctantly decided to purchase a new (and expensive!) cell phone, when my husband, Don, received a call from our daughter in Danville asking if we had perhaps lost a cell phone. We picked it up that day!

We cannot thank Chris enough. He is definitely my hero! His “above and beyond” service makes him an excellent role model for all of us, not only during the holidays, but all year round!

Nancy Young-Bergman, Merced
