Merced responded to the UC in time of need

November 4 was expected to be a quiet Wednesday filled with classroom instruction, faculty research, administrative operations, guest presenters, high school visitors and student activities. But that early morning was interrupted by tragedy.

National headlines would carry the story, and UC Merced and the surrounding community stood in disbelief.

While shocked at what unfolded on campus, many in the community thankfully did not stand still.

The immediate response by local law enforcement agencies and emergency medical services managed the coordination of care with great skill and courage. Community members and elected officials found ways to embrace the campus, and their efforts added comfort in the middle of confusion.

Over the days that followed, restaurants helped feed everyone – from students in on-campus housing to law enforcement and staff – through donated food or dedicated efforts of their pizza ovens. Merced-based merchants worked through the night to ensure the campus vigil felt united, and faith leaders walked hand-in-hand with our students to provide spiritual guidance at a moment when faith had been shaken.

Many services responded with little notice, but with the knowledge that their efforts could make a difference.

I write to tell you all that they did – all of your collective efforts as a community made a difference for UC Merced.

It seems only fitting as we approach Thanksgiving that I share my thankful heart with all of you. I am touched by the generosity, compassion, and community-spiritedness of Merced. You stood with us! For that, I am eternally grateful.
