Mayra Ramirez: UC Merced values acceptance, diversity, inclusion – no room for racism

On Nov. 4, UC Merced survived a tragedy. I am a fourth-year at the university and I can attest that the Bobcat community supported one another. I never understood how tragedy could bring so many people together. I also didn’t understand how it could rip apart a community. The allegations the perpetrator was somehow related to ISIS, and that his attempt to hurt the victims derived from terrorist motives, were simply taken out of proportion. The media focused on the perpetrators appearance and identity. My fellow Bobcats and I experienced the hate firsthand when newscasters and media sources tried to rip apart the sense of community that remained. I hope Merced takes the high road and learns from the UC students to be kind to everyone, regardless of race or identity.

It is important to understand the attitudes and behaviors that cause people to act in hateful ways. The attacks that occured around the world made national news and unfortunately the media and politicians are going after the innocent people who identify as Muslims. UC Merced is a great example in valuing diversity. In the words of the chancellor, “voices of hate and intolerance have no place in our community.” They have no place in our country.
