Eve Owino: President must not turn blind eye to genocide in Darfur
Open letter to President Obama: I’m writing to express my concern about the ongoing conflict in Darfur. In 2008, you stated that, as president, you would make ending the genocide in Darfur a priority. Seven years have passed since you took office and the attacks, rapes, displacement and genocide of innocent victims in Darfur continue, worsening day by day.
According to endgenocide.org, the conflict in Darfur has resulted in roughly 4.4 million people requiring lifesaving humanitarian aid, mainly because of the Sudanese government’s growing restriction on aid workers and supplies. Yet, even with the increased suffering, no action has been or is being taken by your administration. Why hasn’t your administration stepped up or made an effort to assist the millions of innocent Durfurians plagued with violence? Why have you abandoned and turned a blind eye to the slaughter going on when you previously claimed you would take immediate steps to end the conflict?
Stronger response to the violence in Sudan is urgently needed. I urge you to look into the issue and take action by increasing pressure on the Sudanese government to halt the killing in an effort to combat the violence.
Eve Owino, Merced
