Keith Law: Some UC students becoming a nuisance

UC Merced Students are having large parties on weekends that are disturbing neighborhoods and frustrating police. They park up and down the street as far as the eye can see, and a throng of screaming students then head to a very loud house party.

According to the officer who was pulled away from other duties to break up the last party in my neighborhood there were over 200 students. If not stopped, when they leave around 2 or 3 a.m. we suffer the same screaming horde. When students are confronted about their obvious disruption of the peace it is met with defiance, as if we are trammeling a fundamental right.

Many of my neighbors joined in the effort to bring the UC to Merced. We love having the UC here, and want to be good neighbors. We also want the UC to reciprocate by being a good neighbor in return.

I write in hope that we might form a partnership to make sure that in the future students will better respect our neighborhoods and the people of Merced. We also should work to provide safe venues where students can socialize on the weekends.

Keith Law, Merced
