Jean Okuye: Teaching conservation is key focus for district

Re As chair of the East Merced Resource Conservation District (EMRCD), I thank the Sun-Star for the article “Ballico students learn stewardship on Merced River” (Page 1A. March 5).

The EMRCD mission and function is to take available technical, financial, and educational resources, whatever their source, and focus or coordinate them at the local level to meet the present and future natural resources, soil, water and air needs of the state of California, keeping them from unreasonable and economically preventable waste and destruction.

We work with local landowners, community groups, schools, local elected officials and government agencies to disseminate information that will lead to conservation of natural resources in Merced County. Your report of Ballico's March 4th field trip is an example of how we can work together.

Our participation in this event was financed under the Safe Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2006 (Proposition 84), Merced River Education and Enhancement Program for Lower Merced River Stewardship for East Merced Resource Conservation District. Call 209 756-2421 or visit lowermercedriver.org for more.
