Sarah Morales: Investing in youth today pays off tomorrow
A budget reflects a city’s values. You can tell the priorities of a city based on where and how our elected officials spend our money.
What does the city of Merced value? Two years ago, the city council decided to invest in a youth council to provide young residents a chance to participate in making Merced a healthier city. Last year, the city continued to provide funds to the youth council but slashed the budget in half. What will the commitment be this year?
The city of Fresno is investing to operate a youth commission that will provide recommendations to the city. Many other cities across California are making similar investments to support youth councils that are energized and engaged.
The city of Merced should value young residents, not only by supporting the youth council financially but through showing interest in the youth. I feel youth should be listened to and supported in every way. This isn’t all about money; it’s about values. Let’s value our young people today. We will all benefit tomorrow.
