Walt Adams: If you don’t address crime, county will never prosper

After living in Merced County for 60 years, and reading the Sun-Star for at least 55, I have never been more compelled to write my first letter to the editor than I am now.

I am appalled at the blind position the County Board of Supervisors is taking in regards to the seriousness of the crime situation in our communities. Public safety and low crime rates are cornerstones to the success of any community in drawing attractive businesses and the jobs that follow. When new jobs arrive, up goes the tax income.

I have met with Sheriff’s Office heads numerous times concerning crime in rural areas, and I fully understand the difficulties they encounter trying to cover their territory with their limited resources. You don’t suppose the criminals know this? You better squelch crime or you’re not going to get anywhere with your other priorities.

Walt Adams, Merced
