John Hofmann: There are real consequences to strategy of obstructionism
Re “Republicans made their mess” (Page 5A, May 9): The column by Leonard Pitts Jr. was, to me, the most succinct and accurate statement I’ve seen to date relating to the current state of the Republican presidential nomination campaign.
Apologists for what has taken place, and so far succeeded, fail to grasp potential long-term consequences both for the political landscape and for our society in general. Republican descent has been fueled by ever greater dirty tricks, win-at-all-costs and hang-the-expense mentality, and strident obstructionism of the other side’s agenda without any regard to whether or not there is any value in their position or options for compromise.
All appearances suggest it has been irresponsible pandering to a distinct and declining minority. Unfortunately, active stoking of the strategy of inaction over compromise has provided an example, and excuse, for retaliation and a blueprint for U.S. non-leadership to follow for the foreseeable future.
That should insure a continuing loss of prestige and position of leadership around the world, no matter the outcome of the upcoming national election.
