David DeFehr: Merced College Chorale being disbanded, but why?

It has come to my attention that the Merced College Chorale gave its last performance in mid-May. I, along with many others, am devastated.

This musical group, under the direction of Prof. Curtis Nelson, has been a joy to so many in our community. The Christmas and Spring concerts have celebrated the works of musical greats from around the world and have featured live performances by such celebrated artists as Levi Verrinder, cello soloist, and violinist Shinichi Suzuki. Most chorale singers are volunteers who love to sing and who are inspired Prof. Nelson’s leadership and creativity.

It is our understanding the college derives a profit from the two performances. The obvious question is why has the Merced College Chorale seen its last days?

We know it wasn’t Prof. Nelson’s decision. It is believed the primary reason is lack of support from the college administration. The MC Chorale didn’t harm the Merced Community College budget; on the contrary it contributed dollars to the college, plus it was a gift to the community.

Are we to step aside and let this community treasure vanish? Does anyone care? I hope so.
