Theron Sanders Sr.: Atwater needs to explain why our flag not shown proper respect
Re “Disrespect for flag in Atwater” (Letters, June 2): As a mark of respect, and expression of sadness for the victims of the terrorist attack in Orlando, Fla., President Obama ordered the American flag to be flown at half-staff at all public buildings though out the country. So, as I drove around Merced County last week, I noticed compliance with the president’s order everywhere but Atwater. I’m not at all surprised, especially after reading a letter earlier this month in the Sun-Star titled, in which the author indicated the flag was not lowered on Memorial Day, and that this was a problem in Atwater going back years.
I am concerned that, for some unknown reason, city officials are deliberately showing disrespect to the symbol of the United States. I ask the Atwater city manager to please dispel that thought by publicly addressing the city’s policy on how the flag is displayed in front of the city hall and explain how he will insure that steps will be taken to properly and lawfully display it especially during national holidays.
