Bob Calaway: Atwater city manager’s pay misstated in letter

Re “At least pay for gas” (Letters, Jan. 30): The first two paragraphs are correct. The third paragraph not completely correct. All city employees had a reduction in pay when the city hall and other city departments closed on Fridays. The exception was fire and police departments. The writer notes a compensation package of “$262,000 a year, which includes $71,000 toward his retirement” for the city manager. That is not correct.

Our current city manager’s annual salary for 2014 was $144,664 plus $18,443 fringe benefits. He also drives a used police car with over 113,000 miles. This is the same car he used prior to becoming city manager. Also, the city supplies gasoline for all city vehicles used on city business or work..

The use of a city credit card is governed by the city purchasing manual. When a city credit card is used, receipts are turned over to the finance department. Expenditures of funds for car repair or expenses are part of the budget process.
