Kosher seafood company’s nova salmon and sea bass recalled after listeria found
Days before the High Holy Days start with Rosh Hashana on Monday night, a kosher seafood company recalled nova salmon and sea bass after state testing found listeria.
The company is New York’s Haifa Smoked Fish out of the Jamaica section of Queens. Haifa’s notice of the Tuesday recall says sample testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food inspectors found listeria in lot No. 219 of Haifa Cold Smoked Nova Salmon and lot No. 212 of Haifa Cold Smoked Sea Bass.
“For over a decade, we’ve provided our customers with unparalleled customer service and excellent quality kosher seafood products under the strict supervision of the Orthodox Union, which is highly recognized and respected by Jewish leaders around the world,” Haifa’s website says.
If you have the recalled fish products, return them to the store for a refund. If you have questions, call Haifa at 718-523-8899.
Listeria infects about 1,600 people in the United States each year, killing about 260 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children under 5 and adults over 65 are most vulnerable to listeria’s worst consequences, but pregnant women can suffer stillbirths and miscarriages. Most people who get listeria have to deal with fever, stomachaches, nausea and diarrhea.
