4.8 million pounds of chicken that went to hotels and restaurants can have metal
About 4.8 million pounds of frozen ready-to-eat chicken breast and thighs were recalled by Hormel Foods on Saturday because they might have pieces of metal.
This was the second not-food-in-your-food recall involving metal in less than 24 hours. As with Friday’s LSI recall of pork jerky from Costco & Sam’s Club, Hormel Foods told the USDA that it “determined that the metal originated from the conveyor belt used in production.”

“The problem was discovered after the establishment received multiple complaints from foodservice customers finding metal in their frozen chicken breast and chicken thigh products,” the USDA recall notice said.
This recall doesn’t involve food that’s in your home, but what you might run into when eating out.
Hormel said all customers that might have received the chicken have been notified, but the USDA said it’s “concerned that some products may be in the freezers of hotels, restaurants and institutions. These businesses are urged not to serve the product. This product should be thrown away.”
When asked by email, Hormel didn’t specify which “institutions” might be involved.
Hormel recalled:
- 13.9-pound cases of Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Thigh Meat, item code No. 65009.
- 13.8-pound cases of 3-ounce Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Breast, item code No. 77531.
- 13.8-pound cases of 4-ounce Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Breast, item code No. 46750.
