Surdich on Bowling: Locals place in Camellia City 500
The Camellia City 500 Club of Sacramento recently held its annual two-day tournament at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno with the following results received from our local 500 club tournament director, Julie Wescott.
The A division singles saw Marie Herrera rolling a 702 for second place and $80, and Kim Heller was fifth with a 675 for $57. The A division doubles had the team of Verna Fellows and Christina Whitcome taking seventh place with a 1,388 total for $27 each. B doubles had Phyllis Wallbaum and Wescott in third with a 1,420 for $54 each.
The all-events A division again had Herrera in third place with a 1,460 for $35 and Patty Harrell in fourth with a 1,459 for $33.
The bowlers plan to roll in their club’s 44th annual King of Beers No-Tap Invitational on Oct. 23.
All proceeds are for Sacramento youth scholarships and needy families in the area.
500 Club Invitational – Entries have started to come in for the King of Beers No-Tap Invitational on Oct. 23. The event is hosted by the Merced/Atwater Women’s 500 Club for this USBC-certified tournament.
Entry fee is $25 per bowler, and you will receive a buffet lunch and could win some great door prizes.
Three division champs will add $100 to their regular prize winnings, courtesy of the club’s sponsor. They have a great raffle with outstanding prizes and a 50/50 split during the afternoon. The first ball starts rolling at 1 p.m.
Scratch 6-gamer – Modesto’s Myles Duty won his second scratch six-gamer at Yosemite Lanes this year by edging Rick Francis 215-214 for $331. Francis received $240.
On the way to meet Duty, Francis rolled by Mike Clark 234-206 and Rich Custer (Mr. 899) 249-229.
The area’s top scratch bowlers were at Yosemite with 29 entries. The next mini-tourney is Oct. 30 for a $60 entry fee.
Shooting stars – Yosemite Lanes in Modesto had Atwater’s Justin Decker rolling another perfect game in the Black Oak Classic league. Gene Wallace had it going for Corbin Spirit’s team, as he rolled a 279-259-237 for a super 775 series in the Commercial Classic. Ryan Sziraki rolled a 278 in the Classic.
A great bowler has come back after a five-year layoff, as Corey Phillips is in the Atwater Merchants league on Monday night. Great to have him rolling again.
The fun house – I was speaking to a senior bowler last week who mentioned the old Continental Bowl in downtown Merced as the fun house in which to bowl. She said you would bowl with friends and meet new friends at the Continental.
It had a great snack bar with milk shakes made with real ice cream, and great burgers. The Continental had several billiard and pool tables.
The memories have been with her for many years. She still has the friends she met and bowled against at the Continental years ago.
The guys would have pot games after league play, and the losers would buy breakfast at Johnnie’s or Tiny’s waffle shops on 16th Street.
I remember rolling in a few pot games after league at the old lanes with great friends with the nicknames “Turtle” and “Quack.” We would bowl till the early hours of the morning. The All-Star Scratch league at Century Bowl and the Flyers at Bellevue also rolled pot games. No more do you find that.
