‘A Game for Joe’ Saturday in Livingston
The Livingston and Atwater baseball teams will honor “Sweet Potato” Joe Alvernaz when the teams play Saturday at Joe Alvernaz Ballpark in Livingston.
They’re calling the event “A Game for Joe.”
Alvernaz was a longtime supporter of the Atwater/Livingston Yams American Legion baseball program and a lifetime supporter of youth baseball in the two communities.
As a way of keeping the memory and spirit of Sweet Potato Joe alive, the schools created this event that will help offset the costs for kids to play in the Atwater and Livingston summer baseball programs. The event also will serve as an Atwater/Livingston Yammer reunion.
Players from both teams will take batting practice at 3:40 p.m. There will be a home run derby at 4:40, with a pregame ceremony scheduled to start at 5. The game will start at 5:10.
Concessions will be provided by the Crossface Cafe, including sweet potato fries and burgers.
