Dos Palos alum Cody Martin solid in MLB debut for Braves

Former Dos Palos High School standout Cody Martin pitched two scoreless innings of relief in his major-league debut Tuesday night for the Atlanta Braves in a 12-2 victory over the Miami Marlins.

With Atlanta staked to a comfortable 8-2 lead, the 6-foot-3 right-hander breezed through the seventh and eighth innings, allowing one hit while striking out four.

Martin has steadily risen through the Braves organization, consistently producing on the mound since being drafted in the seventh round out of Gonzaga in 2011. That consistency was rewarded with a chance to earn a rotation spot out of spring training.

Martin helped his cause this spring by allowing no runs on four hits while striking out eight in nine innings. The Braves opted to use Gonzaga’s all-time saves leader out of the bullpen. Martin reaffirmed that decision with Tuesday’s near-flawless performance.

“I thought about it for about 16 innings yesterday and today,” Martin told MLB.com’s Mark Bowman about the anticipation of his debut. “Then, finally (bullpen coach) Eddie (Perez) said my name, and I started to get loose. The juices started flowing pretty good. There is nothing better than pitching in a major-league game. I know that feeling now, and I'm going to enjoy it.”
