Surdich on Bowling: Elijah Torres takes BVL state title
Elijah Torres has proven himself as a winner on the big stage. The 17-year-old took first place at the recent Bowlers to Veterans Link state finals for youth Division B at McHenry Bowl.
He rolled games of 160, 223 and 206 for a scratch score of 589. Torres will receive a jacket, watch and a medal for winning the title on March 21.
For local qualifiers in the recent Helen Duval BVL state finals held in Modesto, Dawn Fernandez placed fourth in Division A; Lauren Moosbauer finished 17th in Division B; Barbara Huddleston took 12th in Division C and Amanda Ulmer placed third in Division D.
In men’s competition, Sean McCulloch placed fifth in the Classic Divison; Bob Weimer took eighth in Division A; Fred Ruell finished third in Division B; and Dominic Pugliese took fifth in Division C.
Friendship doubles Sunday
The local women’s 500 club will host their annual Friendship Doubles Tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bellevue. Teams of a 500 club member and non-member guest will roll three games of 9-pin no-tap on a pair of lanes.
All bowlers must have a current USBC membership. Bowlers’ 2013-14 book average will be used; those without one can use a current average sheet of 21 games or more from the league secretary. Entry is $22 per bowler.
Scores from up North
Southpaw Rich Custer rolled games of 300-259-300 for a super 859 on Friday in a Yosemite Lanes league in Modesto, but it falls short of the association’s highest series.
Custer averages a 234.
In the Midway Match Point senior, ex-Bellevue bowler Linda David rolled a 277 with a 661 set.
Out of the ashes
A new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market opened April 1 at the site of the old Cedar Lanes, which was torn down in 2013.
The new market features Cedar Lanes bowling memorabilia encased behind the customer service counter with photos, old bowling shoes, pins, a menu, trophies and patches.
Cedar Lanes brings back memories as it hosted the first PBA tournament I attended; I’ll never forget watching the great Don Carter, Dick Weber and Carmen Salvino roll.
Remember when
In 1978, the Bellevue Bowl team had members Ken Stover, Marty Howell, James Crawford, Ken Trezler and Rich Bettencourt shoot a fantastic 1,147 scratch game and a 3,021 series in the Wednesday Nite Flyers league. Howell rolled a 279 and Trexler had a 289. In the City Championships in 1973, Nick Puglizevich and Johnny Rocha rolled a 1,295 series to win doubles.
Setting it straight
The league highlights of my April 2 column listed the incorrect person as rolling a 544 series. It should have been credited to substitute Dick Miller.
