The Thursday afternoon handicap senior Twilighters league at Bellevue Bowl closed its season with team Number Eight winning the title in a rolloff. Team members with their averages were Mike Bond (146), Vern Addington (113), Dan Roberson (147) and Tom McBride (180).
Bellevue’s most competitive league, Commercial Classic, added money to the prize fund and crowned a new champion this year, as Three Kings and a Queen edged Judd’s Jewelers by four pins in the four-team playoffs. The champion’s members with their averages: Sean McCulloch (223), Suzanne Ruiz (147), Chuck Hand (162) and Ruben Ruiz (210). Last year’s champion, Bellevue Bowl, settled for third, and Pazin & Myers, Inc. took fourth.
There were several 700 series rolled in the playoffs. During the league sweeper, Gene Wallace rolled some outstanding games and a super 814 series. He started with 11 strikes in a row for a 297, followed by a 259 and a 258 to win the sweeper pot.
Yosemite senior no-tap – Bellevue had a senior group in Yosemite Lanes’ monthly senior 9-pin no-tap Friday. After hearing about all the fun their bowling friends were having in the no-tap mini-tournaments in the area, they decided to try their luck. Newcomers to the senior no-tap were our association manager, Keith Hunter, and his wife, director Karen Hunter. Karen won a few bucks in the high game pot and the women’s series by finishing sixth. Keith came home with money in his pocket. Gustine’s Kim “Money Bags” Heller kept her streak going, as she placed third in the women’s series. LaDonna Stone won some cash in the high game pot and high series. Yours truly also made a couple of dollars.
McHenry’s Senior Fun Day – This Friday is McHenry Bowl’s Senior Fun Day no-tap. You never know what the fun is going to be until you sign in. It could be 8-pin or 9-pin or whatever. The potluck is at noon, signups are at 12:30 p.m., and the action starts at 1. Entry fee is $15, which includes your high game pot and high series for men and women. And, it’s always fun. Better bring your 8-pin ball.
Peach Classic – The 66th annual Peach Classic at McHenry Bowl starts its 11-weekend run Saturday. First-place money is a guaranteed $2,500. The tournament has many options for men and women. Bonus days pay an extra $100 for the high score and $50 for the second-highest score. Entry fee is $60, and forms, which include all tournament options, are available at Bellevue. To reserve a spot, contact the bowl at (209) 571-2695.
Baker/Barnes clinic – Yosemite Lanes said it will host its annual bowling seminar and clinic with PBA bowler Chris Barnes and the coach of the pros, Mark Baker, on Sept. 12 and 13. They will focus on lane instruction and classroom work. The fee for the two-day coaching clinic is $350 and comes with two lunches. It fills up fast. I’ll have more information as it becomes available. Baker now has a DVD, which will be at the clinic for purchase.
Remember when – In May and June 1978, Bernita Givens, bowling in the 500 Club Invitational Tournament, took first place with a 552 scratch and 724 with handicap. Diana Mills won the Valley Women’s Bowling Club tournament at Century Bowl. Lori Bauman, a 15-year-old Youth Bowling Association member, had a fantastic 298 game. She combined that with a 162 and a 171 for a 631 series. In the Monday Nite Ladies League at Fleming, Marcia Little had a 216 game and 578 series, and Judy King had a 236 game and 626 series.
