Boxers headed to Junior Olympic National Championships
Six boxers from Merced County are headed to Charleston, W.V., this weekend to compete in the USA Boxing Junior Olympic National Championships as part of the Prep National Championships (8-14 years old).
Merced brothers Jesus (60 pounds) and Daniel Haro (85) will make the trip along with Atwater’s Toby Wooten Jr. (119) and Delhi’s Sandra Tovar (101). Livingston brothers Angel (132) and Jacob Chavez (101) also will compete.
Wooten, Tovar and the Chavez brothers representi the Sheriff’s Athletic League and the 51FIFTY Gym.
Run For Independence in Atwater
The Merced Running Club will host the Run for Independence as part of Atwater’s annual Fourth of July celebration. There will be 2- and 5-mile races. Both races will be run together, starting and ending at Ralston Park at Third Street and Grove Avenue.

Golden Valley to hold freshmen football practice
The Golden Valley High School football program will hold freshmen football practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 9 to July 16. The practices will be at the school from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
