After setting foot on campus at Sonoma State this summer, it didn’t take long for Caly Curran to feel at home.

While attending a basketball camp at Sonoma, Curran instantly felt a connection with the coaches and fell in love with the campus. On Friday, the El Capitan High senior signed her national letter of intent to play basketball at Sonoma State.

“Right away, it just felt like home,” Curran said. “It feels like a college version of El Capitan. The campus isn’t that big. I like that you can walk around. The class aren’t too big so I like that. I’m just excited.”

Curran came over to El Capitan after spending her first three years at Buhach Colony. The move was made for family reasons.

Curran has shown a strong work ethic at both stops.

“She’s a very hard-working individual,” said El Capitan coach Tyler Rogers. “She’s matured a lot on and off the court. She’s really a do-it-all type of player. She can score, rebound, get others players involved. On the defensive end she can rebound and block shots. She’s really a complete player who is only going to get better.”

Curran was an all-Central California Conference first-team selection last year at Buhach Colony. She’s again one of the top players in the CCC this season, averaging 14.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 4.9 steals per game.

“A lot of people doubted I could play at the next level or any level,” Curran said. “For me to prove them wrong means a lot.”

Curran, who has a 3.5 GPA, plans to major in anthropology.

Curran was surrounded by teammates, family and coaches during the ceremony at El Capitan High gym.

“She had a few options,” Rogers said. “I went with her and her mom on the visit. She said she just felt like home. The coaching staff was a real factor. It came down the coaching staff and the connections she made. The campus was beautiful. That helped too.”
