The Golden Valley High boys basketball team honored their five seniors prior to Wednesday night’s game against Atwater.

The Cougars senior responded by opening the game with a 13-0 run, making six of their first seven shots. Golden Valley was off and running on its way to a 67-52 victory over the Falcons at Cougar Arena.

The win pulls Golden Valley even atop the Central California Conference standings with El Capitan at 10-1 with one game left to play. The Cougars (21-6 overall) will host Merced on Friday with a chance to at least win a share of their eighth CCC championship.

Christian Magallanes finished with 18 points to lead the Cougars. Avery Townsel scored 16 points and Aurrion Harris added 10 points.

The Falcons battled back to cut the Cougars lead to 18-12 in the first quarter, but after trailing 31-19 at the half were unable to cut the deficit under double-digits the rest of the way.

Robert Smid paced Atwater (13-14, 4-7 CCC) with 21 points.

The Falcons will finish the regular season on Friday at Buhach Colony.

Golden Valley has won 14 of its last 15 games, including five in a row.

The Sac-Joaquin Section will announce the playoff matchups on Saturday afternoon with an online show at www.cifsjs.org.
