Roundup: El Capitan girls clinch first CCC championship in program’s history
Anaya Shelton scored six goals as the El Capitan High girls soccer team clinched the program’s first Central California Conference championship with a 10-2 victory over Patterson on Thursday afternoon at El Capitan High School.
Shelton also picked up two assists and Haley Espinoza scored three goals for the Gauchos, who improved to 14-4-3 overall and 9-2-1 in the CCC.
Boys Soccer
Golden Valley 4, Merced 2 in Merced — Carlos Morales, Brian Beltran, Isaac Severo and Ulises Zavala all scored goals for the Cougars and Morales added an assist. Andrew Sanchez had six saves for GV.
The Cougars improve to 4-5-3 in the CCC.
Atwater 4, Buhach Colony 0 in Atwater — Armando Ramirez scored two goals to lead the Falcons past the Thunder. Alfonso Torres and Aziel Gutierrez also scored for Atwater and Matthew Brewer finished with five saves.
Adrian Bracamontes had six saves for BC.
Atwater improved to 6-5-1 in the CCC.
Girls Basketball
Merced 46, Golden Valley 32 in Merced — The Bears used a 14-0 run in the third quarter to overcome a four-point deficit and then ran off eight consecutive points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Cougars in the second half.
The victory put an exclamation mark on a 12-0 run through the Central California Conference and extended the Bears winning streak to 16 consecutive games. Merced (24-3 overall) was led by Khya Martin’s 20 points. Amari Stamps added 12 points.
Meanwhile, Golden Valley (6-6 CCC) will now have to flip a coin with El Capitan, which defeated Central Valley 49-38 on Thursday, to determine who will represent the CCC as the third team in the playoffs.
Atwater 68, Buhach Colony 36 in Atwater — The Falcons capped the regular season with a rout of the Thunder. Atwater finished second in the CCC with a 10-2 record and will await to find where they will open the playoffs when the playoff matchups are released by the Sac-Joaquin Section on Saturday afternoon.
Los Banos 61, Ceres 38 in Los Banos — Katie Aragona scored 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to help the Tigers clinched the Western Athletic Conference championship in the final game of the regular season.
Los Banos improved to 16-12 overall and 11-3 in the WAC.
Anissa Sanchez turned in a strong all-around performance for the Tigers with 13 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and seven assists.
