Buhach Colony High senior Justine Navarra was named a recipient of the CIF Spirit of Sport Award for the 2019-20 spring sports season.

Navarra was one of two statewide winners who will receive an award, patch and a $1,000 scholarship. The other winner was Nolan Torres of Corona High.

The CIF Spirit of Sport Award recognizes student-athletes who have demonstrated the 16 principles of Pursuing Victory with Honor are active in school and community service, and exhibit leadership qualities.

“These recipients reflect the positive elements of Pursuing Victory with Honor reinforcing the value of education-based athletics,” said CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti.

Navarra was excited when she found out about the award Thursday.

“I think it’s so cool to be honest,” Navarra said. “So many people apply for things and don’t get it. I’ve been so involved throughout the years, not just since I’ve been in high school. I’ve been involved with Buhach Colony since the school opened since my dad works there.”

Navarra’s father Kevin Navarra has coached football at Buhach Colony since the school opened in 2001 and was recently named the athletic director.

“Buhach Colony has been like a second home to me,” Justine said. “I went to Peggy Heller and everyone there was going to Atwater High. I was one of the only ones going to Buhach. On Fridays everyone would wear their Atwater High clothes and I’d wear my Buhach Colony clothes.

“Buhach Colony has been like family. It will always have a special place in my heart and my family’s heart.”

Justine played softball for four years at BC and was also involved with student government all four years of high school. She created “BCHS Winter Wish Rally” which supplies many families with food, gifts and Christmas trees to celebrate the holiday season.

Justine also volunteers in her community with elderly care assistance and as a youth football camp organizer.

Justine is headed to West Texas A&M to play softball next year. She has a 4.21 GPA at Buhach Colony.

“Justine is highly motivated, very involved in our school and I know she will be successful in her future endeavors,” said Buhach Colony counselor Jennifer Sousa. “Her leadership style is subtle, but she takes charge in group projects and demonstrates her ability to listen to others and work together.”
