Atwater Aviators drop pair late

Marcus Manderbach was cruising.

The Atwater Aviators pitcher entered the ninth inning Sunday night having scattered four hits in eight shutout innings. Even the ninth started well enough, with two quick outs on the heels of a leadoff single. The 27th out proved tricky, however.

The host Marysville Gold Sox used three hits and a walk to get three runs and tie the score. Taylor Sanders provided a walk-off two-run single in the 10th as Marysville rallied for a 5-4 victory and a two-game series sweep.

It was that kind of weekend for the Aviators (5-4). Saturday, the Gold Sox rallied with six runs in the seventh for a 9-4 victory.

Lucas Lorenz had the biggest impact offensively for Atwater. The Northern State (S.D.) infielder had only two hits in the series, but both were timely: a bases-clearing triple Sunday and a two-run double Saturday.

The Aviators return to action Wednesday with a doubleheader against the San Francisco Seagulls at Mills High School in Millbrae. They return home for a game against the Sacramento Legends on Friday and a doubleheader against the Alameda Merchants on Saturday.
