Roseville’s Haggerty, Idahoan Nelson win PBA West event in Modesto
Roseville’s P.J. Haggerty edged left-hander Dennis Horan Jr. 236-225 to win the 10th annual PBA Vanessa Brown Homes West Open on Sunday at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto.
Haggerty, a graduate of Fresno State, is now in the investment business. He was the No. 1 seed when match-play eliminations started. Haggerty received a check for $2,000 and Horan $1,200. A total of 55 bowlers from the Valley, Bay Area and Southern California were rolling.
In the PBA50 division, former Fresno resident Warren Nelson took home the championship to Plummer, Idaho, after starting the morning in 13th place. He won his last PBA regional in 1994. Locals might remember Nelson rolling in the San Joaquin Bowling Club’s tournaments in the Valley.
Nelson won the first three rounds of match-play eliminations and defeated Dave Arnold of Dublin 214-210 in a close championship match. The win was good for $1,500; Arnold earned $1,000.
Longtime PBA member Brian Voss was in Modesto competing in the PBA50 and finished fourth for $800. Earlier last week, Voss placed 14th out of 101 and earned $1,350 in the PBA50 Northern California Classic in Brentwood. Not bad for a week of bowling.

Don’t forget the clinic

The first day will include the physical game and lane play discussions by Baker and Barnes. The second day will include PBA patterns, equipment discussions, including “How to select a six-ball Arsenal” by Barnes, and lessons by Baker and Barnes.
