College Roundup: UC Merced women’s cross country wins Jessup Invitational

The UC Merced women’s cross country team won the Jessup Invitational in Rocklin, Calif. on Saturday morning.

The Bobcats were led by sophomore Elizette Ysais took first with a 6K time of 24 minutes and 31 seconds. Fellow sophomores Anjaneesa Ward (fourth, 25:35.5) and Alexandra Lopez (seventh, 25.:53.4) both turned in top-10 finishes.

The UC Merced finished with 33 points. William Jessup placed second with 57 points. Sonoma State and UC Davis finished third and fourth, respectively.

The UC Merced men finished third out of five teams at the 8-K event. Sophomore Juan Sanchez was the Bobcats top finisher at fourth with a time of 27:39.6.

UC Merced freshman Sharvin Manjrekar placed seventh with a time of 28:20.5.

Women’s Soccer (3-2-2)

The Bobcats beat University of Saint Katherine on Sunday, September 18. Trinidad Quiroz scored two second-half goals to propel the Bobcats to victory. Quiroz’s brace was her second in Cal Pac play. Hannah DeLay also scored for the Bobcats, an equalizer in the 41st minute.

Men’s Soccer (5-1-2)

The Bobcats played to a 2-2 draw with University of Saint Katherine on Sunday, September 18. Andres Lua and Omar Garcia scored for the Bobcats, who outshot Saint Katherine 17-6 as a team.

Lua’s goal was the 43d of his career, putting him into a tie with Juan Flores for the third most in program history.

Merced College

Women’s Volleyball — The Blue Devils started Central Valley Conference play by splitting a pair of matches. Merced College defeated Reedley and lost to College of the Sequoias.

Sophomores Abby Bakken (Merced), Hannah Torres (Pacheco) and Lynette McKenzie (Merced) continue to lead the Blue Devils (4-3 overall).

Men’s Water Polo—The Blue Devils are 9-6 overall in nonconference action. Their leading scorer is freshman Ashton Jenkins (Clovis West) with 33 goals, just ahead of Dominic Guerra (Bullard, Fresno), who has 31 goals and is among the state leaders with 40 assists.

Freshman Kevin Curtiss (Bullard) has posted 29 drawn exclusions, which puts him among the state leaders.

The Blue Devils will be tested this weekend at two-day tournament at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo which features the top teams from Southern California.

Women’s Water Polo—The Blue Devils find themselves ranked No. 10 in the state with a 7-3 record in nonconference play after a three-day tournament in Saratoga at West Valley College, which included a triple-overtime win over traditional NorCal powerhouse Sierra.

Sophomore Liberty Hamilton (Golden Valley) scored from 10 meters as the shot clock expired in sudden death overtime to win the Sierra game. Claudette Asenjo (El Capitan) and Hannah Castro (Turlock) lead an outstanding freshmen group.

Men’s Soccer—At 4-2 in nonconference action, Merced College men’s soccer is pursuing playoff ambitions in anticipation of conference play.

Sophomore Felipe Lopez (Pitman) has six goals and three assists in six games. Sophomores Daniel Borges (Pitman), Julian Cabrera (Livingston) and Carlos Morales (Golden Valley) have been big contributors on offense.

Defensively, Sophomore Giovanni Lopez (Pacheco) has been an anchor. Another sophomore, Thomas Knierieme (Oakdale), has stood out on both sides of the ball.
