Golden Valley knows no limits at U.S. Powerlifting nationals in Las Vegas

Golden Valley High School’s No Limit lifting team had a successful trip to the United States Powerlifting Association National Championships in Las Vegas.

The team came home with six medals, four world records, three American records and four state records.

Leading the way was Philip Vang (114 pounds), who won two gold medals, became the club’s first open division national champion and won the 18-19 junior division. Vang set world records in the bench press (203.9 pounds) and dead lift (314.2).

Adam Xiong (123 pounds) won a national championship and set a world record in the dead lift (380.3) and set an American record in the bench (189.6).

Robertson Vang (148) won a national championship with a world-record mark in the dead lift (435.4).

Wallson Xiong (148) and Joshua Vang (132) won silver medals.

Webb wins Merced County Amateur – Nick Webb shot rounds of 71 and 76 for a 3-under-par 147 total to win the 64th annual Merced County Amateur Championship at Merced Golf & Country Club last weekend.

Webb edged Colby Thomason (148) and Barrett McLaughlin (149) for the top spot.

Ken Noonan won the seniors tournament with a 1-over 145. Noonan shot a 73 and a 72 to beat Terry Foreman (146) and Conrad Nilmeier (147).

Herb Jensen shot a 150 to win the super seniors division. Jensen followed a 73 with a 77. Jim Myers (151) finished one stroke back, and Bob Olds and Chuck Riches each shot a 152.

Los Banos Academy basketball camp – The Los Banos Sports Academy will host a basketball skills camp July 23 and 24 at Los Banos High School.

The camp will run from 10 a.m.-noon and is open to ages 7-18. Participants will work on teamwork, shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, screening and defensive positioning from instructors with college and professional playing and coaching experience. The cost is $20 for one day and $30 for both.

Hunter education class – The Los Banos chapter of the Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation and California Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a free hunter education class at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge on July 25 and 26.

The course consists of a minimum of 10 hours of classroom, homework and field instruction in firearms safety and handling, sportsmanship and ethics, wildlife management and conservation, archery, black powder, wildlife identification, game care, first aid and survival.

The class will run from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on July 25 and 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on July 26. Lunch will be provided on July 25. Full attendance for both days is mandatory to complete the requirements and obtain a hunter education certificate, which is required to purchase a hunting license in California.
