MLB power rankings: Almost a perfect weekend in Mexico City
They say one good turn deserves another. So turnabout might be fair play, but it wasn't much fun to be on the receiving end of a late-game rally as a disastrous end to Sunday's game in Mexico City knocked the Padres off their perch atop the league and the NL West.
Instead of riding seven straight series wins into an NL Wild Card Series rematch with the Chicago Cubs on Monday, the Padres begin the week a half-game behind the Dodgers in the NL West.
That's a fine place to be a month into the season.
Just not as good as it looked before the Diamondbacks scored 10 runs off the Padres' bullpen over the final two innings to spoil the end of a heck of a weekend in Mexico City.
"Yeah, it stinks," Padres right-hander Michael King said. "It’s not very fun when you’re on the other side of it. We also got probably the best bullpen in the league. I kept saying like, (David Morgan) got unlucky. I feel like Ron (Marinaccio) got unlucky. Some weird ground balls, some bounce over (Gavin) Sheets’ head could have been a double play to get out of it. So that’s where it’s probably the elements (in Mexico City) and just got to keep their confidence going in the next one."
