A top seed that almost finished the regular season undefeated. A four-time defending CIF-SS champion with an acclaimed coach who could be retiring. And a reigning section champion moving up a division.

Orange County boys tennis again represented itself well Saturday with the release of the CIF-SS team playoff pairings.

Corona del Mar, University and Woodbridge received the top three seeds in an eight-team Division 1.

The section had featured an Open Division the past several years but Division 1 will serve as the premier division when it begins May 8.

Top-seeded Corona del Mar (18-1) nearly finished the regular season undefeated but lost at University in a super tiebreaker on April 20. In late February, the Sunset League champion beat University 13-5.

No. 2 University (17-3) has claimed the past four Open Division titles and the past two CIF State crowns.

Trojans coach John Kessler recently said he is undecided on returning next season. He has retired as the school’s girls coach after 25 years.

Third-seeded Woodbridge (15-4) captured Division 1 last season. The Warriors placed second in the Pacific Coast League this spring to University and feature Ojai runner-up Brady Tallakson.

Harvard-Westlake (15-3) is seeded fourth in Division 1, which also includes Beckman and Portola. Harvard-Westlake finished as the runner-up to Menlo in the All-American invitational

In Division 2, third-seeded JSerra plays host to Sage Hill on Friday. Mater Dei and Ojai singles champion Matteo Huarte play at Brentwood.

The section finals are May 15 at The Claremont Club and the University of Redlands.
