Patriots' Christian Gonzalez Shows Support Amid Mike Vrabel Drama
With the New England Patriots coming off their Super Bowl loss three months ago, the last thing the players want to do is talk about off-field drama related to their head coach.
Unfortunately, that’s been a huge talking point since news broke ahead of the NFL Draft about an affair involving coach Mike Vrabel and former The Athletic NFL reporter Diana Russini. That story first broke early in April and has continued to generate headlines in the ensuing weeks.
While some people might love gossip, they prefer it about other celebrities or reality TV. Most pro athletes avoid falling into the trap of giving any media sound bites, especially when someone is still coaching them at a high level.
Unsurprisingly, some are still seeking comments from the Patriots’ players on the affair and fallout. Most recently, New England cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez had to shut down any questions about Vrabel’s off-field situation before they started.

“We ain’t gon’ speak on what we talked about inside the building. But I mean, that’s my coach. That’s who I go out there and play for. He’s proven what he can do as a coach. That’s my guy, and I ride behind Vrabes,” Gonzalez told reporters.
Gonzalez’s response, as his teammate nodded in agreement, is one of several that have shifted the focus from the drama to football. It clearly shows he and others on the team have Vrabel’s back, at least when it comes to him being their head coach and leading them through a football season.
Gonzalez joined the Patriots in 2023, so Vrabel is his third head coach, but the one he’s seen the most success under in his young career. He may disagree with his coach’s off-field situation based on beliefs or opinions, but he’s not about to publicly criticize him ahead of the NFL season.
Vrabel has already proven his competence as a head coach and leader, guiding the team to an impressive 14-3 record that culminated in an AFC East title, a Super Bowl appearance, and his claiming the Coach of the Year award last season.
In a decision related to the affair drama, Vrabel indicated he was seeking counseling and that he would advise a player to do the same if their situation might benefit from it. Per ESPN, he indicated he would “lead by example.”
He also suggested it would make him the “best husband, father, and coach” he could “possibly be.”

The off-field drama can be a major distraction for players and teams if they don’t shut down the constant questions early. A recent example is the WNBA’s Dallas Wings, whose Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd recently reunited as teammates after playing under Geno Auriemma at UConn.
They weren’t having an extramarital affair, and previously informed the public they were in a relationship. However, it led to more than a few questions thrown their way after the Wings drafted Fudd No. 1 overall.
That prompted the Wings’ media representative and, more recently, Bueckers to shut down any further inquiries before the season got underway. They want the focus on the sport, not on the off-court relationship chatter.
That seems to be the move Patriots players are taking, based on Gonzalez’s and others’ responses. Still, there are many months and media sessions ahead, leading up to the start of the NFL season, during which they will face more questions about their coach’s drama affecting them.
