Phillies' 4-game win streak come to an end in a shutout loss to Marlins

MIAMI - Zack Wheeler is correct. The Phillies' road back from a dreadful opening month is paved with a string of quality outings from a high-priced stable of veteran starting pitchers.

But sometimes they will just need Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper to mash.

Saturday was one of those days. Brandon Marsh didn't play after getting hit by a pitch on the right elbow. Justin Crawford was a late scratch with a migraine. The third-string catcher started in left field. The right fielder started in center.

Schwarber and Harper to the rescue?

Not this time.

Instead, the Phillies got one hit in a 4-0 blanking by the Miami Marlins, their first loss in the fifth game under interim manager Don Mattingly. Schwarber went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts, extending his whiff streak to eight consecutive plate appearances; Harper went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts.

The lone hit came from the catcher-turned-left-fielder. Garrett Stubbs scorched a one-out single in the third inning. Otherwise, the Phillies did nothing against Marlins starter Max Meyer and two relievers.

Andrew Painter had to be perfect, a tough assignment. He gave up back-to-back-to-back singles but escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second inning. In the third, he wasn't as fortunate.

The Marlins loaded the bases again on three singles in a row. Painter struck out Liam Hicks and was one strike from another Houdini act. But he sailed a high-and-outside sinker to Agustín Ramírez to walk in a run.

Painter walked Connor Norby to force home another run and give the Marlins a 2-0 lead.

Xavier Edwards tacked on a solo homer against Painter in the fifth inning, and the Marlins scored again in the sixth against lefty reliever Tanner Banks.

Schwarber, who struck out in each of his five plate appearances in the series opener Friday night, went down on strikes in the first, fourth and seventh innings. He's the first Phillies position player to strike out in eight consecutive plate appearances since Dylan Cozens, who fanned on nine in a row (with a trip to Triple-A in between) in 2018.
