Astros' Christian Walker Announces Update After Leaving Red Sox Game

The Houston Astros have had one of the best lineups in baseball this year, and Christian Walker has been at the center of that success. The 35-year-old veteran first baseman struggled in the first year of his three-year, $60 million contract, but he is living up to expectations in his second season with Houston.

Through 34 games, Walker has posted a .309 batting average, .386 on-base percentage, .963 OPS, eight home runs and 26 RBIs.

While it is still just May, it is reassuring for the Astros to see their investment paying off. Walker has also continued to excel defensively at first base, which is no surprise for a three-time Gold Glove Award winner.

During Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox, Walker put together another strong performance leading Houston to a win. He reached base four times in five plate appearances, collecting three hits, including a home run. Walker finished the day with two RBIs.

Unfortunately, his final plate appearance brought an injury scare that worried Astros fans. In the top of the ninth inning, Walker was drilled in the head by a fastball. His helmet flew off immediately, and he left the game, heading down the tunnel with trainers.

Braden Shewmake entered as a pinch-runner. After the game, with concern mounting, Walker provided an update on his condition while speaking with reporters.

"I'm good and I feel okay. I think the helmet took most of it and turning away from it hopefully made it more of a glancing blow than a straight impact. But yeah, I feel okay, luckily," he said (h/t Brian McTaggart of MLB.com).

He added that he passed concussion protocol and intends to slot right back into the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against Boston.

This is good news for the Astros, who need Walker's bat in the lineup as they attempt to turn their season around.

Houston currently owns a 13-21 record, sitting in fourth place in the American League West and falling well short of expectations. Walker remaining healthy is essential if the Astros hope to climb back into contention.
