Tigers' Kevin McGonigle Update Emerges After Missing Red Sox Game
The Detroit Tigers have leaned heavily on their young core through the first month of the 2026 season, and 21-year-old shortstop Kevin McGonigle has emerged as the face of that group. His absence from Monday's lineup against the Boston Red Sox raised concerns among fans, but there was nothing to worry about.
Chris McCosky of the Detroit News clarified that McGonigle's absence was a scheduled off day.
The rookie has been one of the Tigers' best hitters this season, leading the club in batting average, on-base percentage and hits through 34 games. He is slashing .315/.407/.477 with an .884 OPS, two home runs and 16 RBIs.

Before this season, he was ranked No. 2 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline and was named the 2025 Arizona Fall League MVP after posting a .362 batting average with 49 total bases, five home runs and a 1.210 OPS over 19 games.
Detroit recognized what they had early on, signing McGonigle to a contract extension well before he could test free agency. On April 15, McGonigle signed an eight-year, $150 million extension, locking him in with the Tigers through 2035.
Even as Tarik Skubal has become the face of the Tigers, McGonigle has placed a close second on his offense alone. His 1.5 WAR ranks second among the team through the first five weeks of the season, right behind Skubal, according to FanGraphs.
The Tigers entered Monday at 18-18, tied with the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central. The path back to another postseason appearance after being eliminated in the ALDS in 2025 will be difficult in the highly competitive AL Central; however, with the Tigers prioritizing days for one of the team's best hitters to extend his production in the long term, it bodes well for the team's chances.
