Magic Johnson Raises Key Lakers Concern Before Conference Semifinals vs OKC

Magic Johnson knows the Lakers have a serious test waiting for them against OKC, and he is already pointing to the area that could decide the series. With LeBron James and the Lakers set to face the defending champion Thunder in the conference semifinals, Johnson warned that Los Angeles cannot afford to be as careless with the ball as it was against the Rockets.

OKC, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, has the scoring power to punish mistakes quickly, so Johnson believes the Lakers will need cleaner possessions, stronger two-way play, and someone beyond LeBron and Austin Reaves to step up offensively.

He took to X to share his preview of the game saying, "My Lakers have an uphill battle going against the reigning World Champions OKC and SGA, who in my mind was the MVP of the First Round of the Playoffs! To beat OKC, we have to find a way to not turn the ball over as much as we did against the Rockets and play great on both ends of the floor - so who's going to step up and provide scoring to help LeBron and Austin? One thing we all know is OKC can score the basketball, so the Lakers are going to have to play some of their best basketball!"

How Will the Lakers Manage Against the Thunder?

The Lakers are about to find out very quickly how different this round feels.

Houston made them uncomfortable in the first round, but Oklahoma City is a different level of problem. The Thunder already handled the Lakers easily during the regular season, and even though injuries make those results a little less clean, they still showed the gap Los Angeles has to close.

The biggest challenge is simple: OKC can beat teams in too many ways. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the headliner, and he is coming off a dominant opening round, but the Thunder are not just a one-man team. They defend, they run, they force mistakes, and they have enough depth to keep pressure on for 48 minutes.

That is where the Lakers have to be much sharper. Against the Rockets, they survived despite giving away too many possessions. That cannot happen here. If Los Angeles turns the ball over, gives up offensive rebounds, or lets OKC play in transition, the Thunder will turn those mistakes into points quickly.

LeBron James will obviously be central to everything, especially with Luka Dončić still unavailable. But the Lakers need more than another heroic LeBron series. Austin Reaves has to look healthy and aggressive, Rui Hachimura needs to punish open looks, and the supporting cast has to give real scoring help.

For Los Angeles, this series is not just about talent. It is about discipline. If the Lakers play loose, OKC will make them pay.
