Boys golf: Windsor, Justin-Siena lead the way at NBL, VVAL qualifying tournaments
Some of the area's top high school boys golfers secured their places in the postseason at the North Bay and Vine Valley Athletic leagues' qualifying tournaments Monday.
Montgomery and Cardinal Newman were the regular-season champions from NBL-Redwood and Oak, respectively, and Justin-Siena won the team title in the VVAL. All automatically qualified to advance as teams to the North Coast Section tournaments in the coming weeks.
Cardinal Newman and Justin-Siena will be competing in the Division 2 championships at Baywood Country Club in Arcata next Monday, while Montgomery will be competing in the Division 1 Championships at Windsor Golf Course on May 18. Justin-Siena is the defending NCS Division 2 champion.
Individual qualifiers from Monday's matches will advance to compete in the Division 2 championships, which also serves as the individual qualifier for Division 1.
The top five individuals from each league qualifying match not on a qualifying team advanced.
Here's a closer look at how Monday's matches went.
NBL
Competing in stormy conditions at Rooster Run in Petaluma, Windsor's Kadin Jones fired the low round of the day, carding a score of 2-under par 70.
Maria Carrillo's Ryan Malm also went under par, shooting 71 to place second individually.
Golfers from the NBL-Oak posted the 12 best scores of the day. Along with Jones and Malm, Ukiah's Milo Doble (72), Windsor's Jaxson Vera (75) and Rancho Cotate's Lucca Keane (77) were the Oak division's other individual qualifiers. Keane finished in a three-way tie with Maria Carrillo's Lucas Barquero and Rancho Cotate's Jameson Rhodes for the final spot and secured his placement via tiebreaker.
The latter two may still have a good chance to advance to the NCS Division 2 championships, however. Windsor is likely to qualify as a team with an at-large bid, which would open up two more spots for Barquero and Rhodes. The at-large teams will be posted by the NCS on Wednesday evening.
Windsor tied with Cardinal Newman in the NBL-Oak regular-season standings, but Cardinal Newman earned the team qualifier spot due to a tiebreaker.
St. Vincent's Jason Phelps was the low scorer from the NBL-Redwood with a score of 83 and will also be advancing to the NCS Division 2 championships alongside Analy's Darren Bauman (85) and Austin Bishop (87), St. Vincent's Jack Hatcher (89) and Analy's Ronin Ireland (91).
VVAL
Justin-Siena completed another dominant run to the league title on Monday at Rancho Solano in Fairfield. The Braves went 12-0 in regular-season matches and posted a team score of 379 at the league tournament, 47 shots better than second-place Vintage.
The Braves were led by Jack Keller, who shot 2-under par 70, and Alex Keller, who shot 1-under par 71. Cade Snoke also fired 75, Nic Perata 80 and Bobby Servetnick 83 for their counting scores.
Since the Braves will advance as a team to the NCS Division 2 tournament, the individual qualifiers will be Vintage's Matteo Villegas (74), Napa's Ari Massey (78) and Nathan Oliver (85), Casa Grande's Ethan Rubino (87) and American Canyon's Quincy Espejo (83).
Petaluma's Mo Rutan (86) and Curt Mertens (84) will be alternates.
