Former Commanders QB Announces Retirement After Eleven NFL Seasons

Former Washington Commanders' QB Taylor Heinicke spent more than a decade proving people wrong, and on Thursday, he got to decide when it was over.

The 33-year-old quarterback announced his retirement on social media, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, closing out an 11-season NFL career that took him through seven franchises, a stint in the XFL and one playoff performance that Washington fans won't forget anytime soon.

"For 25 years, I had the pleasure to play this great sport of football," Heinicke wrote. "It has taught me a lot, not only about myself, but about life as well. Many ups and downs throughout the years, but the ups outweigh the downs tenfold. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would've been able to live this life."

"Thank you to all who have supported me in this journey," Heinicke added in his retirement post. "Excited for this next chapter of my life! And always, Go Skins!"

He closed with a message that said everything about where his heart stayed throughout it all.

A Career Built on Second Chances

Heinicke entered the league in 2015 as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings, competing for a backup spot behind Teddy Bridgewater. His early years were defined by injuries and roster moves. He missed time in 2016, was released in 2017 and had brief stops with the New England Patriots and Houston Texans.

His actual NFL debut came on Christmas Day against Pittsburgh, lasting just one pass before a concussion ended his night. From there, Heinicke landed with the Carolina Panthers in 2018 and started a late-season game following Cam Newton's injury. He re-signed with Carolina but was cut before the 2019 season and eventually joined the St. Louis BattleHawks in the XFL before the league shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Washington Commanders Were Where It All Changed

Heinicke signed with the Washington Commanders late in the 2020 season while still finishing his engineering degree at Old Dominion. After Dwayne Haskins was benched and released, Heinicke got his shot.

He started Washington's wild card game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, threw for 306 yards and added a rushing touchdown in the loss. It was the kind of performance that changes careers, and Washington rewarded him with a contract extension.

He took over full-time in 2021 after Ryan Fitzpatrick went down in Week 1 and remained the face of the position in Washington for the better part of three seasons. In 2022, he stepped in again after Carson Wentz suffered a finger injury and helped the Commanders beat Green Bay, Indianapolis and previously unbeaten Philadelphia.

Heinicke signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023 as a backup and eventually took over the starting role after Desmond Ridder struggled. Once Atlanta brought in Kirk Cousins and drafted Michael Penix Jr., his time there was up.

He was traded to the Los Angeles Chargers ahead of the 2024 season, spent the year backing up Justin Herbert and appeared in four games. He signed a one-year extension in 2025 but was released after losing the backup competition to Trey Lance.
