College notebook: Stathopoulos becomes SRJC's 1st female state wrestling champ
In just its second season, the Santa Rosa Junior College women's wrestling team put together a seventh-place finish at the California Community College Athletic Association state championships and had several wrestlers take home individual medals, including its first-ever state champion.
Sophomore Luana Stathopoulos won all four of her matches over the weekend at Fresno City College to claim the state title in the 138-pound division. She defeated Cerritos' Dalila Preciado in the title match via a 5-2 decision and also earned All-American honors for her performance.
Freshman Rawni Self (235 pounds) and sophomore Jasmine Vo (145) both placed sixth in their weight classes, while freshman Charlie Devlin (124) finished seventh in hers.
Overall, the Bear Cubs had nine wrestlers make it to the state meet this season. They'll look to keep building on the early success of the program next year.
Beach volleyball
It was a successful inaugural season for the SRJC beach volleyball team as their campaign came to a close last week.
The Bear Cubs placed fifth overall in the Big 8 conference and No. 8 in the NorCal regional rankings.
Leading the way were the duos of Lily Comma and Katie Davis and Luka Amand and Amber Smart in the Nos. 1 and 2 playing positions. Both teams qualified for the Big 8 pairs championships, with Comma and Davis placing well enough to qualify for the NorCal pairs championships.
It's a highly notable result in just the first season of existence for the program.
Baseball
The SRJC baseball team opened its best-of-three CCCAA NorCal Super Regional series at No. 3 seed Modesto on Thursday afternoon.
The 11th-seeded Bear Cubs won all three of their games in the first round of the playoffs last week, beating Sequoias 9-2 and then defeating host and No. 4 seed College of Marin 17-11 and 7-4.
JT Summers carried the team in the final win, hitting a pair of three-run home runs in the first and second innings. Cody Collins allowed three runs on nine hits, with five strikeouts, over five innings to earn the win in the start. Nathan Bunyard finished the job with four quality innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five.
The Bear Cubs faced Modesto recently, dropping two of three games in their final Big 8 series of the season. Modesto finished in a two-way tie atop the league standings and closed the regular season at No. 6 in the CCCAA rankings.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday and Game 3, if necessary, is Saturday at noon.
Softball
The SRJC softball team is preparing for its first CCCAA NorCal Super Regional appearance in over a decade starting this weekend.
The 13th-seeded Bear Cubs upset No. 4 seed Sierra in their three-game series last week and will now play at No. 5 seed Hartnell in a best-of-three series starting Friday.
Hartnell finished the regular season as the No. 11 team in the CCCAA. SRJC was No. 19.
The two teams split a nonconference series in February, with Hartnell winning one game 5-1 and SRJC winning the other 7-6.
Track and field
The Bear Cubs' men's and women's track and field team had some standout performances at the CCCAA NorCal Championships last weekend at SRJC.
On the men's side, Mahdi Camara placed third in the discus with a throw of 151 feet, 8 inches, Charly Ramirez placed fourth in the pole vault by clearing 14-09 and Jared Hayes placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 1 minute, 55.54 seconds.
